Custom Surf Car in Newquay

World Surfing Championships, Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall — 28 May, 1989

‘Expressions such as “Surf your troubles away”, “Only a surfer knows the feeling” and “Blimey, that was a good laugh” only touch at the sheer exhilaration to be gained from a good surf’ — Tim Southwell, Record Mirror journalist

Tim Southwell and I went to Newquay one May Bank Holiday in 1989 to cover the World Surfing Championships for Record Mirror.

With not a wave higher than three inches to be had, it failed somewhat as a sporting spectacle. However, the then still-fresh Run to the Sun went on and there were some nice bodies on display (both the human and custom car kind) on Fistral Beach and we came up with a centre-page spread in the 24 June edition.
