Pontnewydd, Cwmbran, Gwent — Spring 1980

‘The Dark Side clouds everything. Impossible to see, the future is‘—
Yoda, Jedi Muppet (Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back)

Met Office forecasting ability, quotation pretty much sums up, I feel

Back in my Newport Harriers athletics days (running 400m as plain Ben Jones in those days), I was out running one evening when I saw this cloud from the canal bank above Pontnewydd. Naturally, I assumed a small nuclear device had been detonated in the distance and determined to continue with my run around Springvale and Fairwater before the fall-out got to me.

Remaining radiation-free, however, I concluded that the distant booming noises were thunder and the cloud was of the rain variety. I managed to get home and get my camera before the aerial display finished and the sun sank into the west.

This picture was taken from the water gardens in Pontnewydd looking east towards Croesyceiliog and LLanfrechfa. On the right is Commercial Street and The Old Bridgend Inn; in the centre is Richmond House. As far as I remember, the rain missed Pontnewydd and Cwmbran altogether. Looks as if Llandegfedd reservoir might not have gone short of water that night, though.
